Broadcom seeks up to $80 billion in debt for AI chip deal

Broadcom is reportedly in talks with lenders to raise $70 billion–$80 billion of debt to finance a massive chip deal benefiting AI companies including Anthropic.

The financing could ultimately be even larger. Bloomberg has reported a structure that could push the total raise to as much as $100 billion, with a senior-secured tranche of $60 billion–$70 billion and a junior tranche of roughly $30 billion.

The deal would be structured through a special-purpose vehicle, similar to Broadcom’s earlier $35 billion financing arrangement with Apollo Global Management and Blackstone to expand Anthropic’s computing infrastructure.

That partnership initially targeted 1 gigawatt of additional computing capacity, while the broader initiative aims to deliver more than 20 gigawatts of compute to leading AI labs by 2028.

Broadcom is increasingly positioning itself as a key alternative to Nvidia, designing custom AI chips and networking infrastructure for companies including Alphabet, Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI.

Broadcom shares rose just over 1% Friday.
